Before nations. Before algorithms. Before everything we ever invented to bring people together — there were cities. You didn't just live in one. You chose one. It shaped you. It defined you. It became the first thing you said about yourself to a stranger.

That never changed.

People say it every day. Berlin-based. London-based. New York-based. Not a location. A declaration. The city you chose, out loud, in two words. It carries weight that nothing else does.

And yet.

Choosing a city and belonging to one are two different things.

You can love your city and still feel like you're watching it from the outside. Still walk past everything worth going to. Still not find the people who see it the way you do. The city is right there. And somehow you're not fully in it.
